CLEARFIELD, Utah — A man has been arrested in Clearfield, Utah, for allegedly killing his grandparents Wednesday afternoon, police say.
According to a news release from the Clearfield City Police Department, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, dispatch received a call from a woman, 60, who had reported arriving home and found her mother and father deceased in their attached garage. The woman reportedly told dispatch that she believed her son was responsible for the deaths and he was currently inside the house.
According to KTVX, the son was identified as Jeremy Belt, 26. Belt was living in his grandparent’s house in the basement.
Multiple agencies responded to the house and found both deceased people, an 85-year-old woman and an 87-year-old man. According to CCPD, officers attempted to help the couple but their injuries were “beyond help.” The woman was taken to safety and officers surrounded the house.
Belt reportedly called his mother, the woman who called dispatch. She allowed an officer to speak with him and the officer was able to get him outside of the house, according to CCPD. Belt was taken into custody.
According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt allegedly told officers that he was concerned his grandparents and other relatives had tried to harm him. Belt also allegedly admitted to killing his grandparents.
According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt allegedly confronted his grandparents in the house and then they went to the garage to leave. Belt allegedly told them they could not leave because he had cut the wire to the garage door. Belt reportedly followed them into the garage and kicked them both in the chest. They both fell to the ground. Belt then allegedly grabbed a hammer and hit their car. Belt said he tried to get them to respond to him but then he allegedly hit them in the back of their heads with a hammer.
Belt then allegedly ran inside to get his rifle, loaded it, and went back to the garage. According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt allegedly shot one of them in the head, then went back inside to get another bullet and shot the other one in the head.
According to KTVX, CCPD reportedly found psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana inside the house, along with a rifle in Belt’s bedroom.
Belt has been charged with two counts of homicide and a count of assault (domestic violence), according to CCPD.
The investigation is ongoing. CCPD said they expect to release more information on Monday, including the names of the deceased. Additional charges may be added and will be determined by the outcome of the investigation and by the Davis County Attorney’s Office.
