MANSFIELD, Conn. — A woman in eastern Connecticut called 911 on Wednesday after she said a man put a premature infant on the hood of her parked car and left the scene, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Connecticut State Police, the woman was returning to her vehicle in Mansfield at about 4:17 p.m. EDT when she saw a man place the infant on her car and leave the area in a dark-colored vehicle.
Officials said the child was taken to an area hospital and was determined to be born prematurely between 28 weeks and 30 weeks, WVIT-TV reported. The child is listed in stable condition, the state police said in the news release.
“The male was described as a Hispanic, heavyset with short black hair, wearing a black long-sleeved T-shirt and black jogger-style pants,” troopers said in the news release.
Connecticut has a Safe Haven Law that allows parents to leave a newborn at a hospital emergency department within the first 30 days of the baby’s life without being prosecuted for abandonment, WVIT reported.
Mansfield resident Jose Pagan said state troopers asked to check his cameras, which pointed toward the area where the infant was found.
“The police told me 4:30 p.m., but I looked on my cameras and don’t see anything at this time,” Pagan told WFSB-TV. “Last night I can’t sleep. Thinking about the baby. Watching the window, thinking somebody is right there.”
Troopers are asking that anyone with information about the man’s identity or where he can be located to call Trooper Matt Hogan at 860-896-3236.
