Gordie’s Midday Gossip - Married at first sight behind the scenes

“Married at First Sight” contestants have some strict rules to follow.

If you haven’t seen that show “Married at First Sight”, you’ve probably at least heard about it. It’s the reality show where couples get married without ever having seen, met, or heard anything about each other.

Then they have to try to make the “marriage” work.

Well, there are rules the contestants have to follow if they want to go through with this insanity. Here are some of them:

1. The marriages are 100% legally binding in the U.S. There IS still some showbiz involved, though. For instance, contestants may have to repeat their vows for different camera angles.

2. All couples sign a prenuptial agreement. It’s simple and straightforward, and basically says that if things don’t work out, both parties leave with what they brought to the marriage.

3. All cast members and wedding attendees must sign a non-disclosure agreement. This one’s typical of all reality shows. You don’t want people blabbing before the episodes air.

4. Contestants can have a reality TV background. But if the casting team thinks you’re just in it to build a reality TV career, they probably won’t cast you. They’re looking for people who actually want to find love.

5. Contestants are filmed for up to 12 hours a day, and have a daily budget. Unfortunately, that budget is only $150 a day, and you’re still responsible for your own expenses.

6. Contestants must undergo a psych evaluation and DNA testing. They also test physical traits like the hip-to-waist ratio in women and the hip-to-shoulder ratio in men.

7. No previous marriages or children. They want contestants to have as few strings attached as possible.

8. Weddings must be small. One contestant says he was only allowed to invite 20 guests.

Brides and grooms do get to control some elements, like flowers, food, music, or an overall theme. But they have to choose from a list of options.

9. Contestants can’t work during filming. If you’re not in a position to step away from your job . . . or even QUIT . . . you’re not “Married at First Sight” material.

10. The show may help cover some divorce costs, but there’s no guarantee. Contestants are supposed to be SERIOUS about their commitment. Maybe knowing that a divorce won’t be free helps with that?
